Can you use yogurt instead of mayonnaise?

So yes, the answer to your question is you can use yogurt instead of mayonnaise in tuna salad. It might taste a little more tart initially, but my husband, the lover of classics, loves it. In fact, we substitute greek yogurt for mayonnaise pretty frequently over here in all sorts of recipes including tuna.

Tuna Salad with Greek Yogurt = EASY Meal Solution

I kept this recipe super simple and easy…just 4 ingredients on purpose. Let’s be honest, tuna salad is typically one of those last-minute lunch/dinner type of meals so I need to be able to whip it up on the fly or use as an easy meal prep recipe. And for me, that means minimal ingredients.

Now, my 1-year-old will happily eat tuna simply mixed with greek yogurt (and nothing else)… that is as long as he makes it himself. But, my husband and I like be a little more complicated so we use the 4 ingredients to make our healthy tuna salad:

  • Tuna
  • Greek Yogurt
  • Mustard
  • Dill Relish

What kind of tuna should I buy?

Honestly, any kind of tuna should work for this tuna recipe. However, here are a few things I consider when choosing my tuna.

Albacore vs Light Tuna

Another popular question I get is what kind of tuna we should buy. There are 2 main kinds of tuna, chunk light/skipjack, and albacore/white tuna.

Albacore tuna is known to have less of “fishy” taste than light tuna. However, albacore does have 3 times the mercury content as light/skipjack tuna.

The difference in Tuna Brands

I typically buy Wild Planet tuna which is packed in water only (many popular tuna brands are packed in oils) and is sustainably sourced with 100% being pole and line caught. Therefore, the fish in Wild Planets tuna are smaller and younger which means less accumulation of mercury as compared to some cheaper and more popular brands. A lesser-known fact: Wild Planet tuna is only cooked once which helps to prefer Omega 3s whereas many brands are cooked twice. Another reason I love this brand is it’s easy to find at most major grocery stores including Walmart.
