What to Look for in Healthy Fruit Popsicles

When you’re shopping for healthy popsicles, there are a few things to look for. When I made this list I looked for popsicles with minimal or no added sugar, real fruit, and no artificial coloring or sweeteners. When purchasing popsicles for your kids (or self) here’s what I recommend doing:

  1. Check the ingredient list.
  2. Avoid popsicles with artificial colors or flavors.
  3. Look for popsicles made with real fruit.
  4. Finally, avoid popsicles with added sugar (or buy with minimally added sugar, especially if purchasing for toddlers.)

6 Healthy Popsicle Brands Your Kids Will Love

Without further ado, here are 6 of my favorite healthy popsicle brands. I tried to include a variety of popsicles both for various preferences and some that are easier to find in local grocery stores.

1. Deebees Organic SuperFruit Freezee

This is my favorite popsicle to buy for my kids. They love it and the ingredient list is the simplest I’ve found! They have no added sugar and are just comprised of juice and fruit purees. The only additional ingredients are guar gum and organic fruit flavoring.

Where to buy: Deebees are easy to find at local stores including Walmart and Kroger. Plus you can even order online at Amazon (they are shelf-stable and you freeze them yourself at home.)

I first started buying them from Thrive Market which is another option as well (if you aren’t already a member you can join now!)

2. Good Pops – 100% Juice No Sugar Added

Ok, this is my husband’s first choice as far as no-sugar-added popsicles. And I do admit they taste great. I would say they are more flavorful than Deebees so they may appeal more to kids who are used to eating regular sugar-filled popsicles.

Where to buy: Amazon, Thrive Market (join now)

3. Johnny Pop

These are really creamy and delicious for something different. Now, they do have cane sugar which is added sugar. However, at 9 grams per popsicle it is still significantly less than a traditional popsicle (21 gram added for a traditional popsicle brand.) The ingredient list is very simple with minimal additives (organic guar gum.) They do contain organic heavy cream which is totally fine by me, but something to keep in mind if your family is sensitive to dairy.

My kids really enjoy these and consider them a big treat for something different as opposed to the Deebee’s Freezees they are typically offered.

Where to buy: Local grocery store (some Targets, Walmarts, Sams Clubs), Local Healthy Grocery Store (my Fresh Thyme carries them.) You can locate in your town here.

4. Chloe’s Pops

No Sugar Added Variety: Chloe’s No Sugar Added variety does not contain sugar; however, it does have monk fruit extract in it. I prefer my kids not to have non-nutritive sweetener in general (even stevia and monk fruit) although monk fruit is noted as safe for kids. Therefore, I do prefer the Deebee’s Freezees and GoodPops mentioned above for my kids and would not necessarily buy these for my kids, but would certainly let them try one if offered.

Regular Variety: The regular Chloe’s Pops has a minimal ingredient list which I do prefer. No artificial sweeteners or colors is a plus in my book. However, they do contain 12 g added sugar per pop making Johnny pops a preferred choice for my kids. However, if you or your kids can’t do dairy then this is a great alternative to Johnny Pops and honestly, the sugar difference is not that significant since we are talking about a special treat.

Where to Buy: The other positive to Chloe’s Pops is they are a bit easier to find in my town. I can buy them at my local health grocery store (Fresh Thyme) and my Sam’s Club also carries them. You can also find them at Amazon FreshYou can locate in your town here.

5. Annie’s Fruit Juice Pops

While these are fruit juice-based they contain 14 g added sugar. As I mentioned before, this is still a preferable choice to a traditional popsicle. Especially if you take into account that traditional popsicles also usually contain artificial colors. I include these in the list because they are easy to find in local grocery stores. If you need a last-minute treat for preschool or your kiddos, they may be easier to find.

Where to buy: I found these at my local target (not a super target.)

6. Outshine Ice Bars

Similar to Annies, I prefer the other options to these, but Outshine bars are arguably better than a traditional popsicle since they don’t contain artificial coloring, are fruit juice based, and do have less added sugar (12 g as opposed to 21 g.) Plus, they are easy to find at most local grocery stores.

Note on No Added Sugar Outshine Bars: I would avoid the no sugar added variety of these bars as they do contain acesulfame potassium and artificial sweetener (sold under the brands Sunette and Sweet One.) I definitely avoid artificial sweeteners with my kids.

Where to buy: These are very easy to find at many local grocery stores.

Favorite Healthy Popsicle Brands

My general go-to healthy popsicle for toddlers is Deebee’s Freezees with GoodPop 100% Juice right behind it. However, we do buy Johnny Pops and Chloe’s Pops locally occasionally for a different kind of popsicle (on a stick!) If you can’t find any of these options locally, Annie’s and Outshine popsicle brands are a definite step up from traditional popsicles loaded with artificial colors and sugar.
