These instant pot steel cut oats will be a weekend game changer for us. In the winter especially we love to cook steel cut oats on the weekends. The warm, creamy goodness is so satisfying. However, we usually cook them on the stove or in an oat bake. Of course, this is before I had my Instant Pot (this is the newer version of the one we have –and love!!) and when I was flipping through the small book that came with it I saw the little recipe for 3 Minute Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats.

The time on the Instant Pot recipes is always a bit misleading since it does take extra time to get started and then to depressurize. However, I felt like these were still ready pretty quick since I didn’t have to stand by the stove and stir them for 10-20 minutes while they cooked.

By the way, if you aren’t familiar with steel cut oats or are confused about all the different types of oats out there be sure to check out my Complete Guide to Oats.

Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats: Apple Cranberry Style

Anyway, this morning I decided to try Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats. My recipe uses the same basic proportions as the Instant Pot cook book. I was completely out of non-dairy milk, but I did have some extra apple cider leftover from my Apple Cider Green Smoothie I made last week, so I used some of that. Then, I was going to play up on the apple-ness and chop up an apple to throw in as well when I realized I was also out of apples. (I really need to grocery shopping ?.) Instead, I threw in some dried cranberries. The combination turned out to be perfect!

Apple Cranberry Instant Pot Steel Cut OatsYou can top it with whatever yummy add ons you like: nuts, coconut flakes, more cranberries or other dried fruit, fresh fruit, greek yogurt. The possibilities are endless. But, this recipe was actually also delicious without any extra toppings!! Other than the apple cider, I did not add any sweetener into the recipe, so you can sweeten it to your tastes using honey or maple syrup if you like.

  1. I tried this recipe, doubling it for a larger group and after 6 mins of cooking it is still has way too much liquid. Either your liquids are off or the cooking time is.

    1. Hmm, that’s really odd and I’m sorry to hear it didn’t turn out for you!
Did you cook it using a pressure cooker such as an instant pot which cooks much faster/differently than stove top or slow cooker? Also be sure you had the instant pot on manual which is high. We use this ratio of 3 parts liquid to 1 part oats in the instant pot on the manual setting 3 minutes cook time (more time total for it to reach pressure and then depressurize) with a lot of success. Let me know if you have any questions.

      1. Also, I should’ve mentioned you could do this in a slow cooker, but you would want to cook it much longer, like overnight (and be sure to spray your slow cooker beforehand as well.)

  2. This recipe looks great, but I am new to the instant pot and I made steel cut oats this morning using the multigrain setting. It took 40 minutes to complete. I think I could have done it easier and faster on top of the stove.
In addition to that some of the other things I have tried have not been that successful. I really want to find the benefits of using this appliance but so far not that crazy about it.
Let me know some of your thoughts.

    1. The benefit is that you don’t have to babysit whatever you are cooking. I put my steelcut oats on when I first get up. Its cooking while I get my family up and while I shower and get ready. When we are ready to eat, the oats are ready for us. Same with dinner… I can have dinner cooking while we work on homework or just enjoy family time.

  3. Mine came out perfect! I put a cup of frozen blueberries, and some Stevia in it for the cook. Came out amazing. Tablespoon of heavy cream and it’s perfect! Thanks!

    1. Great way to add some protein! Thanks for the positive feedback. Glad you enjoy the recipe!

    1. I always use fresh or frozen cranberries they add a little tartness
whereas dried cranberries have been sweetened.
